Ginny worked full-time as an IT consultant in Calgary's downtown financial area while Gary worked part-time in retail allowing him to continue with the responsibilites of raising their daughter.
Country living was always their goal so in 2004 they packed up their belongings and drove the 5000 kilometers from Calgary to Nova Scotia.
Now Ginny enjoys creating a large, organic vegetable garden each year with heirloom varieties raised from seed. The many different tomatoes are the shining jewels in August's crown. The sheep and alpacas at Barnwood Inn make their own contribution ! Ginny regularly volunteers in local activities and is an active member of the Bear River Board of Trade.
Gary's background in construction has stood him in good stead during the renovation of their period property and today the results can be seen. Despite being busy with the Inn and various other projects, he is an active member of the Bear River branch of the Royal Canadian Legion where he has recently taken on the role of Building Manager. He is looking forward to the day when he can take it a little easier and live this relaxing country life that he's heard so much about.
Emily has attended the French-immersion stream for her schooling since grade one and hopes to continue these studies. She also enjoys volunteer activites and is already a veteran at village events. Having recently obtained her Baby-sitter's certificate, Emily is busy caring for local children. In the future, she hopes to combine her love of animals with a lucrative career as a veterinarian.
What the Hurlocks love about Nova Scotia are the friendly people and the similarities they see between Nova Scotia and the U.K. Being surrounded by water and green hills feels like coming home again.
They wouldn't be anywhere else.
